Had a great tough ride today. Lot's of climbing and hammering. Somewhat humid but not too hot.
Bob and I picked up a new member yesterday. Say hello to George, another great rider from Great Neck.
George met Bob, Barry (a.k.a. Twitchy) and yours truly at base camp. We did one of our usual favorite routes: left at Wheatly, through Locust Valley, Horseshoe, Mill Hill, Moore's Hill, Lawrence, Snake, Huntington, etc.
In Old Brookville we swept up Herb who was trying to catch up to the rest of the Wheelmen. They were waiting for him at one of their usual stopping spots at the corner of Chicken Valley and Piping Rock. It was quite a sizable group of about a dozen or so. We politely stopped for a minute to say hi to those who are still on speaking terms with us and started off again. Jan, who inexplicably has still been riding with the Wheelmen, jumped at the opportunity and joined us, again. (He'd done that before at the Wheatly meet.)
Another strong rider (I can't remember his name) also joined us for a short while, then peeled off to go home while we were climbing Mill Hill.
Isaac apparently got dropped on Horseshoe, while George had disappeared from sight after Lawrence. I had also neglected to warn George about the sudden stop sign at the bottom of the steep descent of Mill Hill and he blew through the crossing screaming something about not being able to stop. Fortunately no one got hurt. A heck of an initiation into our club though. If you can survive this you can take anything we can dish.
So after we reached Cold Spring, the 4 of us (Bob, Twitchy, Jan and Beast) were able to stick together for the rest of the ride, even with Twitchy's sudden afterburner bursts of speed and my occasional drops in speed. In proper Renegades fashion, we finished off with Vista Hill. Did it hurt? You bet it did!
I'll be away next weekend. Check with Bob about meeting at base camp or elsewhere, if he's not around to ride.
See you on the road.
Beast
